The Battle Of Wounded Knee is more known as the Massacre Of Wounded Knee due to the ratio of soldiers to Indians. Indians were outrageously outnumbered resulting in the deaths of many Indians. It's said that causalities consisted of around 150-200 + Indian men, women, and babies and around 25 soldiers. The cause of this battle is truly unknown but there are a few ideas as to how it started. It is believed that a soldiers ordered an Indian to release his weapon but, he was def and didn't hear the orders, and the other idea was that an Indian didn't want to hand over his new rifle so while trying to take it away, a shot may have been fired. From then on, shots were fired and many were killed including the Sioux's chief, Chief Big Foot. Chief Big Foot said to major Samuel "I am sick. My people here want peace." Major Samuel replied with "I won't, nor will I have any parlaying at all; it is either unconditional surrender or fight. What is your answer?" and Chief Big Foot replied by saying that they surrendered. In efforts to become allies, Chief Big Foot tried, but the soldiers did not comply. It was selfish and unnecessary for the soldiers to act they way they did. It seemed that Chief Big Foot was a peaceful leader and just wanted peace among the tribe and the government, but Major Samuel did not, and because of that the battle was fought, and many Indians lost their lives, thus putting the population of Indians at its lowest ever.
